MSc Mechatronics

University of Twente

Program Description

MSc Mechatronics

University of Twente

After the academic year 2010-2011 the Mechatronics programme will be continued as a specialization of the master’s programme Systems and Control (Robotics and Mechatronics).

Mechatronics deals with the synergistic combination of mechanical engineering, electronics, measurement and control in the design of products and processes.

Mechatronics focuses on mechatronic design: the integrated and optimal design of a mechanical system and its embedded control systems. By integrating design of mechanical parts with the design of measurement and control systems, the overall performance gets better, more effective and often cheaper than by separate and independent design. Typical mechatronic systems are the cd/dvd player, various automotive systems and industrial robots.

At the University of Twente there is a tradition in mechatronics of more than 15 years. The research is now embedded in the Drebbel Institute for Mechatronics.

After the academic year 2010-2011 the Mechatronics programme will be continued as a specialization of the master’s programme Systems and Control (Robotics and Mechatronics).

This programme has no specializations.

Program Structure

The two year program consists of four compulsory courses, four to eight elective courses, a preliminary project including research training and a thesis project. If you have a mechanical engineering background, you will get elementary electrical engineering courses and vice versa. This prepares you to the truly integrated approach that is typical for mechatronics. Elective courses will enable you to specialize in different areas with special emphasis on design aspects, modeling and simulation, control, robotics or measurement systems.

Labour Market

The field of Mechatronics is new and rapidly developing. Professionals in this field are very much sought after in the car industry, assembly industry and (micro-) manufacturing industry. Anywhere where electronics and control meet mechanical engineering mechatronic engineers are leading.

As a Master in Mechatronics, you have gained the knowledge and skills to design complex systems in which you find an optimum between mechanical performances, effective control strategies and costs. Mechatronic systems are found in all modern industrial processes as well as in home and automotive systems. As it is a still rapidly growing field, you will be able to find employment in a wide range of industries. Working on your thesis project, within the research institutes or in industry, you already experience cooperation with industrial partners and learn to work in multidisciplinary teams. The Netherlands, and Europe as a whole, is home to strong players in mechatronics, including car manufacturers, Philips, ASML, ABB, Thomson CSF and Océ. If your ambition is a career in science, a Master’s degree is the best preparation for continuing your studies as a PhD student within the research institute.

Admission Criteria

The general requirements for admission to a Master programme are:

-- A relevant BSc degree* (or equivalent) based on a programme of sufficient academic level and quality to be able to complete the Master of Science (MSc) degree course you intend to pursue at the University of Twente.

-- For applicants whose mother tongue is a language other than English:

1. Academic IELTS**, overall band score of at least 6.5.

2. TOEFL**, internet based (TOEFL-iBT) of at least 90. Please note that we do not accept “Institutional TOEFL” tests except for the one organized and certified by the Netherlands Education Support Office in Jakarta.

3. Nationals of the People’s Republic of China please note: A “NESO-certificate” must be sent to the University of Twente as proof of validity of your qualifications. In order to obtain the NESO-certificate you will need to take the IELTS test. The Netherlands Education Support Office in Beijing does not accept the TOEFL for a NESO-certificate.

4.Indonesian students should take their TOEFL test at one of the centres recognized by the NEC (Netherlands Education Support Offices) in Indonesia.

Please note that exclusively nationals from the USA, U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada are exempted from the English test requirement.
