How can you design a fraud-resistant, electronic toll collection system? How can an automobile production plant minimize production costs without compromising on quality and safety? How can you design a new complex consumer product (e.g. cosmetics, food, pharmaceutical formulations) and implement it in an existing production facility?


These are typical questions that an Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) engineer can address. In a progressively technological society, IEM engineers will increasingly become leaders of technological innovations and design.


The IEM Master’s degree programme focuses on learning how to deal with practical problems in business and how to obtain solutions driven by a technical and scientific design perspective. The general aim of the IEM Master’s programme is to train engineers to acquire a thorough overview of all primary and secondary business processes, especially with respect to the design of a technological product or process.


More than its nearest competitors, the IEM Master’s degree programme of the University of Groningen focuses on technology. About 65% of the curriculum is dedicated to engineering and technology, while about 35% focuses on management and business.


There are three specializations within our programme:

  • PTL: Production Technology and Logistics
  • IE: Information Engineering
  • PPT: Product and Process Technology


One of these specializations has to be chosen right from the start of the programme.

Core modules


The IEM core programme consists of the following themes or fields of expertise:

  1. (Applied) mathematics/numerical methods: The mathematics and statistics you took in your undergraduate years are applied in courses in the field of business process simulation and systems engineering, in which complex case studies are carried out in order to obtain a quantitative analysis of business processes.
  2. Management and organization: You will learn to design complex technological products or processes by getting acquainted with strategic management of technology and innovation strategy. You will also acquire expertise in the field of finance and patent law.
  3. Scientific methodology: Dedicated research methodology and systems engineering courses will deal with how real-life business issues can be translated to models and vice versa. Central themes in such courses include the regulatory (design) cycle and a system-oriented approach.


Specialization subjects/electives


Other courses that make up the IEM Master’s programme are specific for each of the three specializations. You will be admitted to one of the following tracks according to your undergraduate background:

  • PTL: Production Technology and Logistics
  • PPT: Product and Process Technology


Admissions Requirements for international students

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Management or equivalent field
  • The Admission Board may decide you need to take supplementary courses
  • Proof of English proficiency is required (TOEFL 580/237/92, IELTS 6.5, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English), with the exception of students whose native language is English
