BREAK THROUGH, PREVENT OR IMPROVE PROBLEMATIC CHILDREARING SITUATIONS

  • Do you find it fascinating to investigate how the environment influences the upbringing and development of children and young people?
  • Do you want to contribute to achieving an optimal upbringing and development climate for children and young people?

Childrearing is not always easy. The Master’s programme in Clinical Child, Family and Education Studies emphasises the childrearing needs of children, youth and parents. As a remedial educationalist, you can diagnose, treat and help prevent childrearing and development problems at home and/or in an institution. Moreover, you can contribute to the innovation of pedagogic care systems.

This Master’s programme will train you to become a competent professional so you are able to analyse and influence problematic childrearing situations and it will enable you to contribute to the innovation of pedagogic care systems.

The working language is English

This programme’s working language is English, with the option of completing individual components in Dutch, such as your thesis, internship report or other individual assignments. You can also decide to follow the programme completely in English, along with the international students who are taking our Master’s programme.

Specialising

We offer you a programme with two specialisations (‘tracks’).

  • Orthopedagogical Care for Children, Youth and Parents (direct client contact)
  • Orthopedagogical Systems & Innovation (indirect client contact)

The tracks are distinguished by the content of your internship, thesis and individual electives. In this way you can create a unique profile.

Preparing for the labour market

In the programme you will learn to research practical questions from an orthopedagogical viewpoint. This will enable you to help families and their surrounding networks (schools, neighbourhood teams, etc.). The Master’s programme fulfils the requirements of the Dutch (Professional) Association of Educationalists (NVO) for registration as a general remedial educationalist. Following completion of the programme you can register as a general remedial educationalist and work as a behavioural scientist in various institutions for orthopedagogical care and childrearing issues.

Possible fields in which you can work include:

  • youth services
  • forensic care
  • disabled care
  • child rehabilitation
  • student care
  • educational institutions
  • national knowledge institutes for childrearing issues

Research feeds education

Our staff members are particpating in highly qualified research in the field of education, development and learning. (For example: research programmes Child and Adolescent Studies and Education and Learning)

Aside from their research work, they also teach classes for this Master’s programme. This means you will benefit from recent scientific insights into the orthopedagogical field. Moreover, as a Master’s student your thesis can contribute to the current research within the programme;

  • Extra support for toddlers: KleuterExtra (“ToddlerExtra”)
  • A pupil who has a good relationship with his/her teacher is more motivated and performs better
  • What works against bullying?
  • Prevent young people drinking at too young an age
  • Focus on other scientific disciplines

As a remedial educationalist, you will frequently encounter complex childrearing problems that not only requires knowledge of (ortho)pedagogy but also of other specialisations. You will therefore also devote attention to related scientific fields such as developmental psychology, neuropsychology, child and youth psychiatry, forensic psychiatry and juvenile justice. You will learn to approach childrearing problems from a multi-disciplinary perspective.

Objective of the programme

This Master’s will enable you to develop yourself into an academic professional. Armed with scientific insights and competencies, you will give advice, support, treatment and guidance concerning problematic childrearing issues. As a remedial educationalist, you will also make an important contribution to the research of practical care issues related to children and youth. You will be able to apply scientific theories in practice. Thanks in part to you, children, youth, their parents and the systems surrounding them will function to their optimum potential.
