Introduction
The graduate program in taxation is designed for practicing accountants and attorneys, recent accounting majors, and non-accountants wishing to enter the field of taxation. Emphasis is placed on tax research and planning as well as technical competence in practical applications of the current tax law. Successful completion of the curriculum requirements will lead to the degree of Master of Science in Taxation.
Philosophy
The goal of the M.S. in Taxation program is to foster the students' professional and intellectual growth in the specialized area of taxation. Practical as well as analytical skills are emphasized. The program is tailored to enable the tax professional to effectively analyze client problems and to cope with the challenge of new tax laws in the future.
Objectives
The educational objectives of the Master of Science in Taxation program were developed by the Accounting faculty in conjunction with the curriculum committee over a two year period with input from the Accounting Department's Professional and Academic Advisory Board. At the completion of all degree requirements, students should be able to demonstrate the following:
- A breadth of expertise and specialization in taxation.
- A proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
- Enhanced analytical skills in the application of the new tax law.
- An awareness of ethical issues in tax practice.
- Enhanced understanding of the international aspects of doing business abroad.
- An appreciation for a team approach to problem-solving.
