MS in Accounting

The Master of Science in Accountancy program has consistently been ranked in the top ten in the nation. Currently, it is ranked nationally as the sixth “Best Accountancy Program” for 2012 by Public Accounting Report and is open to domestic and international applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree (or its international four-year equivalent) from an accredited college or university with an accounting concentration. The AACSB accredited M.S. in Accountancy program satisfies the 150-hour educational requirements adopted by more than 48 states and jurisdictions for certification and licensure as a CPA.

The M.S. in Accountancy program is a one-year, two-semester (30-hour) degree program, which is offered on a full-time, traditional academic year basis. Admission is granted on a rolling basis for fall or spring semester entry.

During each semester, a two week International Interterm study abroad course is offered. In the fall or spring semester, students have the opportunity to study abroad in China.

Objectives

These courses have four components: seminars and lectures, field trips (heritage and cultural visits), dialogues and exchanges, and introduction to local language.

  • To learn about the latest political, economic and social developments from experts operating in these regions
  • To have a contextual experience of living and studying in China

Financial Reporting and Assurance Services Track

The Financial Reporting and Assurance Services Track provides depth in the areas of financial reporting and assurance services, as well as finance. This track is ideal for those preparing for a career in public accounting, especially in the audit area. Students interested in corporate finance or in careers with financial institutions will also benefit from this specialization.

Tax Services Track

The Tax Services Track equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to confront the increasing complexity of tax laws and to meet the growing demand for highly trained tax professionals. This track provides an in-depth study of taxation issues in the context of today’s business environment while improving students’ problem-solving skills. The Tax Services Track is designed to prepare students for a variety of professional opportunities in the taxation area, including careers with public accounting firms, business enterprises, and governmental agencies. As a result of industry input, students choosing the Tax Services Track have the ability to complete 21 credit hours of tax related courses.

Admissions

The M.S. in Accountancy program welcomes qualified applicants who possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Applicants should have at least a major in business with the required accounting courses. Students lacking a sufficient business and/or accounting background may need to complete additional coursework to enroll in the M.S. in Accountancy program. Candidates may apply to the M.S. in Accountancy program at the completion of their junior year in college. Personal interviews will not be scheduled until a completed application is on file.

The Admissions Committee seeks to admit motivated applicants with superior intellectual ability, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the potential for a successful career as a professional accountant. The Admissions Committee evaluates applicants based on the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate academic record including:
  • GMAT score GMAT code is XM72D73
  • Transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
  • Course descriptions from accountancy and business coursework
  • Proficiency in the English language** TOEFL code, if required, (sent by ETS) is 2456.
  • Personal statement*
  • Professional, community and extracurricular activities
  • Personal interview (if requested by the Admissions Committee)
  • Two letters of recommendation

*Applicants to the M.S. in Accountancy program must submit a personal statement which details the applicant’s personal characteristics which will enrich the University of Notre Dame. Your personal statement should be typed, a maximum of two pages, and double spaced. Please put your name at the top of each page. The personal statement should include as many of the following components as apply:

  • Significant life experience and/or challenges overcome
  • Ethnicity/cultural heritage
  • Educational attainment of parents and grandparents (i.e., whether you are a first generation college student)
  • Unique background or special talents
  • Community service
  • Goals and achievements
  • How past leadership experiences have prepared you for active involvement in the University of Notre Dame M.S. in Accountancy program.

**TOEFL: All non-U.S. citizen applicants (and U.S. citizen applicants, who have lived/studied extensively in other countries) must submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®). The (TOEFL®) may be waived for applicants who have completed a minimum of six full-time semesters or nine full-time quarters in a U.S. university or for applicants who have completed at least six full-time semesters or nine full-time quarters from an approved university. Applicants seeking approval must submit (1) official documentation from the Registrar’s office of their undergraduate institution showing that the primary method of instruction was English and (2) receive M.S. in Accountancy Admission Committee consent.
