The Master of Environmental Planning is offered by the School of Geography and Environmental Studies in either full-time or part-time mode. The course can be studied on-campus at Hobart or by Distance Education. The minimum completion time is one and a half years full-time; the maximum completion time is four years part-time.

A bachelor degree at credit level or better in any discipline or a degree or other tertiary qualification deemed by the Faculty to be equivalent.

Course Objectives

The course addresses the central role of environmental planning in achieving environmental, social and economic sustainability. Essential planning theory is integrated with understandings drawn from biophysical, social, cultural, legal and public policy disciplines. Urban, regional and rural environments are considered, and emphasis is given to planning across all land tenures at catchment and landscape scales. Extensive use of case studies provides students with practical examples of major environmental planning issues....

Energy costs have become a critical issue since the worldwide consumption is increasing and production of greenhouse gases is limited. This drives to the situation where people who are educated to deal with minimizing energy usage to be in demand. These people have an appropriate knowledge to optimize the conversion and production of energy. The new joint programme of Materials and Processes of Sustainable Energetics offers a new and unique approach to energy issues. Programme does not teach how to produce more energy but how to use energy more efficiently.

Materials science and technology is traditionally strongly based on chemical science and education. In line with the development of new high tech materials, technologies and processes, their properties are studied at the Faculty. As a result of successful research in the field of new electronic materials, European and Estonian Centre of Excellence was established at the Faculty for the study of materials for solar energy. Extensive cooperation with Tartu University, European universities and industry are conducted as well, which gives students excellent possibilities for practicing and working abroad....

Environmental management has become a necessity for many organisations as they respond to commercial, regulatory and consumer pressures. The international standard for environmental management systems, ISO 14001, is increasingly being implemented by industry and governmental organisations to satisfy these pressures and provides a structured basis for achieving continual environmental improvement, for maintaining regulatory compliance and for the prevention of pollution. In many cases it can lead to significant cost savings. A significant part of the scheme will be spent working on a major research project, based either at the University or in industry.

The programme MSc in Energy & Environmental Management is designed to give a deeper understanding of the inter-relationships between the environment and topics such as energy technology, environmental law, business strategies, policy and other areas. It focuses on environmental auditing, assessment and management procedures, as required by industrial and commercial bodies. Thus the programme emphasises the application of environmental knowledge, but pressures on the wider global environment are also studied. Furthermore, in order that students can better understand these applications, the basic principles of the various disciplines are also covered. The Master of Environmental Management (MEnvMgt) is offered internally by the School of Geography and Environmental Studies at the Hobart campus.

The program attracts people who are interested in environmental management, or who anticipate responsibility for environmental policy formation, or a role in environmental education. The course extends the professional expertise of people working in such fields as agriculture, community welfare, economics, education, engineering, forestry, law, medicine, planning, public health, political economy, science, and resource management. The course is of 18 months duration for full-time study or up to three years part-time.

The Master of Applied Science (Marine Environment) is a 1.5 year degree offered through the National Centre for Marine Conservation and Resource Sustainability of AMC, an institute of the University of Tasmania.

Students enrolling in either course can select one of six specialisations offered: Marine Conservation, Global Change, Fisheries Management, Aquaculture, Seafood Quality and Safety, or Ocean Governance.

Students enrolled in each degree undertake eight units of coursework according to the CORE and Elective schedules for each major.

The Master of Applied Science (Marine Environment) takes an 'applied marine/maritime' approach by focussing on translational science and by providing a trans-disciplinary education experience. The environmental, health, and safety management MS ensures that graduates can identify and leverage the regulatory, voluntary, and business drivers for environmental health and safety (EHS) programs to design and implement effective EHS management systems and programs. Synopsis

The revival of nuclear energy on an international level has led Parisian research partners in the nuclear domain and the nuclear industry to the creation of a Masters course that brings together all our research in the nuclear domain. This course, being both vocational and research based, will allow to respond to the demand for strong industrial growth by training future professional, researchers and lecturers in the discipline. The projection on the job market is of around 1000 positions per year in the next ten years.

The Nuclear Energy Masters Course aims to teach both French and foreign students to a high level the principles and knowledge required for the nuclear industry. It should allow companies recruiting such students to gain precious time during the initial employment period, thanks to the detail and breadth of the course material. This course also aims to prepare students for further research in the nuclear field (reactor physics, simulation and modelling, instrumentation, radiochemistry…)....

The Ph.D. program focuses on sustainable production systems — systems that create goods and services using processes that are: non-polluting; conserving of energy and natural resources; economically viable; and safe and healthful for workers, communities, and consumers. Coursework and research takes a systems level and interdisciplinary approach to solving seemingly intractable sustainability problems, as opposed to single disciplinary and locally optimized approaches destined to yield marginal positive impacts.
