Master of Commerce in Taxation

The Graduate Tax Program, which leads to the Master of Commerce in Taxation degree, consists of coursework designed to provide a sophisticated background in the general principles of domestic and international taxation. It is designed to expose students to the rigorous academic challenges of tax law and to give them the opportunity to examine in greater depth those areas of fiscal theory and practice which are of particular interest. The objective of the program (Master of Commerce in Taxation) is to confer an advanced degree that reflects a mastery of tax law, its practice, ethics and subtleties. This is accomplished through a regimen of independent research, which culminates with the submission of a research report.

Selection is based upon a demonstration of intellectual capacity and evidence of the applicant’s commitment and ability to overcome challenges in attaining a postgraduate qualification. Preference will be given to applicants with professional work experience in the field of taxation.

Classes are relatively small (generally not more than 15 students), but candidates receive training in advanced research technologies, including tax research on the Internet. For the International Tax Module, which extends over some eight months, students have internet access to the extensive notes, articles and electronic research databases of the LLM Program in International Taxation presented by the School of Law at St Thomas University in Miami. The St Thomas University Law School facility houses over 280 000 volumes and volume equivalencies and has integrated technology and computerized legal research services.

Curriculum

The Master of Commerce in Taxation is a part-time program that extends over two academic years. The extremely broad and diverse curriculum comprises a program (Master of Commerce in Taxation) of coursework extending over 18 months and a research report. The research report must be completed during the last 6 months of the second year. The coursework component is weighted 75% (or 18 credits) and the research report as 25% (or 6 credits) of the degree. Where there is good cause, the Higher Degrees Committee may extend either period.
