It is estimated that there are 161 million visually disabled people in the world, 37 million of whom are blind (excluding refractive error data). The majority of these people live in developing countries. An estimated 80% of blindness is avoidable. The major avoidable causes of blindness are cataract, trachoma, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, refractive errors, vitamin A deficiency and onchocerciasis. Appropriate planning and implementation of eye health services is required to address this global health problem....

This course aims: to provide epidemiological training by distance learning for professionals in academic departments, research units, or in the health services. This course aims to develop the careers of doctors whose interest is the practice of medicine in tropical and developing countries and global health. The course provides training in clinical tropical medicine at the Hospital of Tropical Diseases (a small but unique component), and a broad choice of study modules to enable students to develop or extend interests in a wide variety of subjects relevant to the practice of medicine in tropical and developing country environments.

The studies will be a combination of basic life sciences, human biology and disease, clinical medicine, up-to-date research methodology and practical training in research groups. The Master’s thesis will include a personal research project. From the students the interdisciplinary nature of the programme requires dedication and good study skills.
