The major avoidable causes of blindness are cataract, trachoma, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, refractive errors, vitamin A deficiency and onchocerciasis. The International Master's Degree Programme in Translational Medicine (TRANSMED) utilises discoveries in basic research to develop new therapies or medical procedures - and applies patient and clinical data for basic research. The aim of the TRANSMED programme is to prepare students for successful research careers at the borderline of science and medicine. TRANSMED provides early integration into medical research groups and a streamlined curriculum with the graduate schools of the Faculty of Medicine for smooth continuation to Ph.D. studies.TRANSMED is organised by the Institute of Biomedicine, Institute of Clinical Medicine and Haartman Institute. The studies will be a combination of basic life sciences, human biology and disease, clinical medicine, up-to-date research methodology and practical training in research groups. The Master’s thesis will include a personal research project. From the students the interdisciplinary nature of the programme requires dedication and good study skills.
