Programme information

Interest in stress is increasing in terms of scientific research as well as the rapidly growing commercial stress management sector. This programme provides an academically respectable and science-based qualification in the study of stress, dealing specifically with the mechanisms by which psychological stress can induce illnesses and examining issues of measurement, prevalence and management.

Students look at how psychological states can affect physical wellbeing, in particular the role of stress in the development of various diseases, such as coronary heart disease (the biggest killer in the west) and metabolic disorders includingdiabetes and mental illnesses. It is important to emphasise that this programme is not intended to be a general counselling course as it focuses specifically on the psychobiology of stress....

Summary

This applied postgraduate programme develops students’ skills in intervention and audit strategies. Students carry out an intervention in an applied setting to either deal with populations or individuals particularly affected by levels of overweight.

Through this experience, students acquire a good understanding of the factors playing a role in the development of obesity and strategies to tackle it. The MSc Control of Infectious Diseases aims to bridge the disciplines of epidemiology, laboratory sciences and public health and policy for training and retraining of students who wish to work directly on a multidisciplinary practical approach to the control of infectious diseases, and to equip students with specialised skills that will facilitate a career in the control of infectious diseases as staff of health ministries, health departments, national or international disease control agencies, aid organisations or universities.

Programme information

Sport psychology is the latest scientific field to be embraced by the high-performance, professional sporting world. This programme has been designed, and is taught, by BASES-accredited sport psychologists. Consequently, it aims to provide the knowledge and practical skills that they have found essential for successful practice as a consultant, lecturer or researcher.

Specifically, the programme critically examines the philosophical and theoretical basis of assessment, support and intervention, to give an informed and holistic perspective of the profession. It is delivered in a manner that supports and stimulates students’ active engagement in their professional development and provides invaluable experience of aspects of being a sport psychologist. Masters-level programmes are yet to be considered for BASES kite-marking, however, the experiences gained through this programme will assist greatly in the completion of the BASES Supervised Experience process....

The MSc Demography & Health aims to offer a broad training in the theories and methods of demography and the population sciences and their application to global health, social welfare and economic development. Emphasis is placed on studies of social, cultural and economic determinants and consequences of population change.

This is Europe's only graduate course in demography with an emphasis on health. The MSc Epidemiology program aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to make valuable contributions to both epidemiological research and public health. Epidemiological methods are used increasingly in medical research, public health practice and health care evaluation to investigate the causes of disease, and to evaluate interventions to prevent or control disease. Epidemiology is a key discipline for understanding and improving global health. This course covers both communicable and non-communicable disease epidemiology.

Graduates enter careers in medical research, public health and community medicine, epidemiological field studies, drug manufacturers, government or NGOs....

This degree covers :  the whole breadth of public and global health allowing students to follow a general stream of study (Public Health stream), which focuses mainly on high- and middle-income countries, or to concentrate on one of five other streams (Environment and Health stream; Health Economics stream; Health Promotion stream; Health Services Management stream; Health Services Research stream).

This course aims to train individuals in all aspects of STI management and control. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are a global health issue as they are a major cause of morbidity worldwide, and recognised as facilitating the transmission of HIV infection.

The World Development report 1993, 'Investing in Health' rated STIs, not including HIV infections, among the three top causes of healthy life years lost in women in developing countries. This course is run jointly by the School and University College London (UCL). Graduates go into a broad range of communicable diseases/reproductive health posts. This course aims to provide an introduction to the concepts and methods used in reproductive and sexual health research and to equip students with the principles, methods and research skills necessary to conduct policy-relevant research. It provides a non-clinical foundation in the main aspects of reproductive and sexual health: family planning, obstetric health and AIDS/STIs (not including laboratory-based studies). The MSc is Europe's only graduate course in reproductive health research, and is designed mainly for those interested in the developing world, but developed world issues are also accomodated.
