The History Department is a leading centre for the study of Modern History and has a strong reputation for research and postgraduate education.
The MA in Modern History is designed for history students who are particularly interested in focussing on the study of the Modern period. Courses are available on British, American and European History from the eighteenth century to the present.
Swansea University has excellent research resources for postgraduate study in the area of Early Modern History. In addition to the general holdings in the University library, the National Library of Wales at Aberystwyth is within travelling distance. The University works closely with the National Galleries and Museums of Wales. There is a postgraduate common room and an electronic resources room available in the James Callaghan Building.
Standard Entry requirements
2:1 (upper second) degree or an equivalent qualification, a GPA of 3.0 and a minimum IELTS of 6.0.
Scholarships and Bursaries
AHRC awards are available and Local Education Authority awards can sometimes be obtained.
The University and History Department offers a number of bursaries for graduate study for the UK and EU.
Research
The Degree includes a training element/research folder, designed to equip students to undertake advanced work in history and the humanities and to assist them in producing a research-based dissertation. In addition, students choose three courses that allow them to explore particular historical topics in depth. These elective courses reflect the research interests of the members of staff who teach them. The courses on offer vary from one year to the next, but will always include a choice of topics and geographical foci. The MA is available as a full-time degree (1 year) or part-time degree (minimum of 2 years).
