MA in Linguistics
LANGUAGE – AN EVERYDAY MIRACLE
The MA programme in Linguistics focuses on the following areas: language in connection with its functions and use; conversation analysis research; structures across the languages of the world; language development; and language typology. Research workshops guide students into selected research areas. Linguistics at Aarhus University has a strong international research profile. If you already have a BA in linguistics, you can proceed directly to the MA programme.
A Bachelor’s degree in another subject requires one full year’s study (60 ECTS) in linguistics to give access to the MA in Linguistics.
RESEARCH-BASED TEACHING, EXPERT SUPERVISION
The programme is project-oriented and empirical. Students have the opportunity to design their own profile based on a range of available subjects, which ensures thoroughness, depth and breadth. Teaching is always based on the newest research, and active student contributions including presentations, reports and data presentations are important. Student and group projects receive thorough supervision and there is the option to conduct independent or project-based research. All students are assigned a lecturer/researcher as mentor.
Graduates from the programme have pursued careers in a variety of fields, for example as consultants in bilingualism and integration; as designers of language technology and tests; as developers of web-based language teaching and language teachers (at colleges of education, schools for the deaf, language schools etc.); as editors of dictionaries; as Danish lecturers abroad; as language therapists and counsellors for people with reading difficulties; as self-employed communication experts; and of course as researchers and lecturers at universities. Linguistics graduates’ skills in communication and in systematisation of complicated data qualify them to work as consultants, communications officers and PR specialists.
“The MA in Linguistics at Aarhus University was the best choice I could have made. The environment is great. Teachers are receptive and friendly and there are many events to get you integrated. The programme gives you a wider perspective in linguistics and prepares you for research in different fields. The department has a good network of experts to support various research topics. For example, I would like to study the endangered language of a runaway slave community in Brazil. I got real support from the professors and other researchers in the department preparing for this adventure.”
