MA in Interior Design

The RCA Architecture School is expanding parallel disciplines to address the realm of ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ design, from the design of a window to the design of a city. The global ecological need to increase urban density, reduce waste and carbon emissions means that the re-use and adaptation of existing buildings will be a growth area in the international construction industry.

The new MA in Interior Design is offered not as an interior decoration course, but as an opportunity for graduates to extend their thinking on ‘altering architecture’*, i.e. that interior design is the site of spatial and physical intervention within existing buildings.

The two-year programme will be run in parallel with the Architecture programme, with separate and related areas of production. The course includes lectures, seminars, group work and individual thesis work. This is carried out in the unique RCA studio context of inter-disciplinary, workshop-oriented, speculative study. Students will be able to focus on specific inside themes such as future changes of use, office or exhibition design, but also encouraged to investigate and research areas relevant to the experience of buildings, e.g. new materials, lighting, fixtures and fittings, component design and colour theory.

The course will be delivered by practising designers, architects and theorists, international leaders in their fields. Opportunities for industry connected live projects and research will be developed. The MA course culminates in the RCA degree show, where completing students exhibit their work to the art and design world.
