MA in Economics

International University of Japan

Program Description

MA in Economics

International University of Japan

This newly offered two year MA program awards a MA in Economics degree to students who successfully complete all requirements. The IMF scholars through our tailor made program for them named Macroeconomic Policy Program belong to this new MA degree program within the IDP, while Macroeconomic Policy Program requires the IMF scholars to take more courses related to macroeconomic issues. The goal of the program is not only to let students understand modern economics frameworks, but also to equip them with analytical tools in economics, and this new MA degree program focuses on more economics than our current program in International Development, both of which are offered within the IDP.

To achieve the goal, the program offers purely academic and policy-oriented training courses in which theoretical and empirical frameworks and tools in economics are taught. The program assists in enhancing professional and highly technical skills needed at leading institutions as well as agencies in developing and emerging countries faced with consistently changing economic circumstances. In terms of the coverage and quality of offered courses over the wide range of economics and related social sciences, the curriculum of the program is among the best in comparison with other MA in economics programs.

Similar to another MA degree program in International Development, this degree program consists of required and elective courses: The required courses provide theoretical as well as empirical frameworks and tools of modern and up-dated economics, which are indispensable for critical analyses of many issues in our modern society. While required courses crystallize fundamental but important skills, the elective courses stimulate students to apply them, which students equip by taking required courses, to more practical and policy-oriented issues. Based on our understanding that economics should be applicable and thus more practical to explore several important issues in our real world, applications of what students equip through required courses to more practical issues which are discussed in elective courses help students digest purely academic as well as highly developed economics tools. Both of required and elective courses are followed by thesis writing in order to maximize educational effects of the program, and thus the quality of theses of students could prove high standard of the outcome of this educational program. Highly qualified MA theses also give students their confidence as well as satisfaction, which will also result in leading them to their promising future careers.

Different from another MA degree program in International Development, this degree program requires students to take more economics related courses instead of courses of development issues. Thus, this newly offered degree course of MA in economics would be more suitable for potentially promising students who are relatively more interested in pure economics rather than its applications to development issues, while our high concern is still with applications of modern economics to practical issues.
