MA in Counseling Psychology

The mission of counseling psychology program is to prepare graduates to function as effective counselors in a wide variety of settings. Performing successfully as counselors requires graduates to integrate theoretical and research based knowledge with therapeutic skills and personal characteristics to form an ethical, professional and caring counselor. The program seeks to prepare graduates for success in clinical , consultative and administrative tasks they will encounter in their practice.

Programs Objectives

The program objectives are based on the mission. Upon graduation, the successful
student will be able to:

  •   Display a command of knowledge base required for professional counselors.
  •   Conduct an effective individual counseling session and effectively co-lead a counseling group.
  •   Apply APA/counseling ethical principles, professional standards and requirements within the counseling field.
  •   Conduct a literature search using computerized methods, organize and integrate findings into well-written paper using APA style.
  •   Demonstrate the ability to accept supervision, collaborate with others, and communicate effectively with peers, professors, clients and supervisors.
  •   Gain an understanding of the current trends in the job market, self-marketing strategies and networking strategies through the practicum.
  •   Demonstrate cultural awareness and the ability to function effectively in a multicultural environment.

Undergraduate prerequisite MTH 2210; PSY 1105, 1110, 3110, 3115,
(PSY3140 recommended)

25 hours of personal therapy is required before practicum one.

Students may also take a certificate course in chemical dependency or health psychology
