The postgraduate programme 'Catholic School Leadership: Principles and Practice' is the only course of study available in the UK that specifically supports the distinctive leadership development needs of leaders and aspiring leaders at all levels and within all phases of Catholic education.

This unique course offers both valuable career building academic qualifications and the opportunity to reflect upon practice to help you develop the skills needed within your current role.

Our flexible modular programme can be accessed wherever you live - within the UK or overseas. The same high quality programme is offered through alternative modes of study designed to meet the varying needs of busy professionals.

Courses involving regular face to face seminars based on the St Mary's campus or at other centres, commence in early October 2011 – apply now to secure your place on these courses. The date for the first Module 1 Saturday School is 1st October 2011 from 9.30am .

If you are happy to work independently with online support you can study through our Full Distance Learning mode. Full distance learners can start the course at any time of the year.

If you are committed to Catholic education, whether you an aspiring leader, carry a teaching and learning responsibility, have a senior leadership role or are a headteacher or principal, this course will support your ongoing professional and career development.

The programme is built on a solid theoretical foundation, but it also provides members with the opportunity to explore practical responses to the day to day challenges facing middle managers and senior leaders working in Catholic education. The feedback we get is that colleagues find the input excellent and they also value the fellowship gained from learning with, and from, others working in Catholic schools.

Programme Content

Up to date, practical, relevant
The modules are constructed to ensure that they are relevant to school and college leaders at all levels and in all phases of Catholic education.

The modular programme allows students to build credits towards the 60 required for a Postgraduate Certificate, the 120 required for a Postgraduate Diploma or the 180 required for the full MA.

Each of the first four 30 credit modules contains two strands to ensure that principles and practice are addressed in each module.

Research Methods and The Dissertation

To achieve the full MA, you are required to complete and submit a 20,000 word dissertation.

You enrol for two modules: Research Methods (15 credits) and The Dissertation (45 credits) and are provided with a detailed Module booklet and a course reader:
Bell, J. (1999) Doing Your Research Project, Maidenhead: Open University Press (5th Edition)

The choice of topic is yours - with only the requirement that the focus must relate to an aspect of Leadership within Catholic Education. Once you have proposed a topic a supervisor is allocated who will provide support as you progress. You normally have up to 1 year to plan, research and write up the dissertation. Assessment for Research Methods is based upon your progress up to the research stage.

Modes of Study

Our flexible modular programme can be accessed wherever you live - within the UK or overseas. The same high quality programme is offered through alternative modes of study designed to meet the varying needs of busy professionals.

The mode you will choose will depend upon your personal preferences and to some extent on geography as where you live may limit the options open to you.

Some people feel it is important to meet other colleagues regularly to discuss issues and they enjoy the 'face to face' contact with fellow students and tutors. For those who are happy to work independently and feel they do not have the time to commit to regular seminars the full distance mode may be perfect.

Centre Based Courses

The MA in Catholic School Leadership is taught by St Mary's lecturers in a number of regional centres that make access to the programme easier for busy school leaders.

By blending monthly evening taught seminars - mixing input with lively discussion - with independent and e-learning, participants can more easily fit the course in with the professional demands of their roles in schools and colleges. Take one module with four seminars per module in each half of the school year. All the centres have excellent facilities.
