MA in Asian Studies - India and South Asia Studies

INDIA AND BEYOND IN THE ASIAN CENTURY

South Asia is one of Asia’s most dynamic regions. It is home to 25 per cent of the world’s population, to the world’s largest democracy, and to rising new ‘development star’ economies like Bangladesh. The region’s nuclear powers are asserting themselves more and more on the global stage. The MA programme in Asian Studies – India and South Asia Studies offers an in-depth but interdisciplinary understanding of the rapidly transforming society and culture of India and South Asia, its increasing interactions with Asia, and its entangled history with the West.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDY ENVIRONMENT

The programme offers three components: a distinctive focus on India and South Asia, a broader Asian perspective, and a chance to specialise in either language-based or international skills. Firstly, courses draw on the insights offered by disciplines such as anthropology, history and political science and apply them in Indian and South Asian contexts. These insights are deepened during a study semester abroad. Secondly, students interact closely with China and Japan specialists within the larger MA in Asian Studies so as to situate India in a larger Asian framework. Thirdly, in order to understand the complex and often contradictory social and cultural realities, students choose between learning Hindi (India’s most common language) on an advanced level in the language track, or acquiring the skills to deal with the Indian subcontinent in an increasingly globalised and interconnected world in the international/non-language track.

CAREER PROFILE

Graduates of the programme will have acquired not only first-hand experience of the region, but the crucial cross-cultural competencies that are required for working as part of a team in international or Danish companies and organisations that are expanding their work with and inside Asia. Graduates will find work not only in government agencies but in consultancy firms, media houses and the tourism industry. Those planning to pursue a career in academia through PhD research can apply to the Graduate School, Arts, either after the first year or after completing the MA.

“The Master’s in Asian Studies – India and South Asia is a timely and highly relevant initiative. South Asia is on the fast track to emerge as a key region in a changing world order. With its offerings of linguistic competencies as well as international studies, this Master’s degree programme provides a useful gateway for any student seeking a career within the versatile and expanding field of interactions between Denmark, Europe and South Asia.”
