Program Description

MA Social Work

University of Kent, School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research

The MA in Social Work offers you the opportunity to gain a professional qualification in social work alongside a Masters degree. The programme offers successful graduates eligibility to apply for professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) the regulatory body for social work. The MA provides the national required standard in knowledge and skills needed by professional social workers. The programme also provides extensive work in practice learning settings that meet Government requirements. It is a full time programme running from September of Year 1 to end August of Year 2. The qualifying MA in Social Work requires more time commitment than a more traditional MA.

The MA invites you to think coherently and systematically about the context, nature and aims of social work in the UK. It will provide a comprehensive overview of social work theory, skills, knowledge, interventions and practice as well as research skills. In addition to assessed work linked to both taught modules and practice learning you will be expected to write a dissertation in a specific area of research to be submitted at the end of Year 2.

There is considerable emphasis on structured seminars on the MA with an expectation of significant participation from students. Class sizes are generally small and you will always be taught by established members of the academic staff. You will be allocated an Academic Advisor from the team who will support you throughout the two years of the MA.

Social Work runs at the University of Kent's Medway campus, and benefits from the excellent new facilities on site. The degree is taught by lecturers with extensive social work practice experience who are active in research and scholarship, and the student body is a cosmopolitan mix of mature and younger students, from different ethnic backgrounds and nationalities.

Fees and Funding

The fees for the qualifying MA in Social Work are £6,000 per annum for an EU/home student and £9,000 per annum for an international student.

The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) is responsible for the administration of a non-means-tested social work bursary. There is a cap, nationally, on the number of bursaries that are made available to all qualifying social work programmes. We are waiting to hear from the NHSBSA about the number of NHS bursaries our MA in Social Work will be allocated. It is likely that there will be fewer bursaries than places on the programme.
