MA Design - Fashion and Textile

Master’s – level Programme provides generic design and lifestyle related inputs arranged to generate and encourage specific design applications based on student’s self-chosen area.

The principal aims of MA programme are:

  • To educate individuals from suitably qualified backgrounds to function as higher managers and specialists for the dynamic fashion industry in India and abroad.
  • To hone creativity, initiative, innovation and judgement along with intellectual and conceptual acumen compatible with the fashion industry.
  • To inculcate graduates with capacity for critical professional engagement and investigative attitude in the fashion business context.
  • To develop and enhance graduates lifelong learning skills and personal development so as to be able to work with self-direction, professionalism and originality to contribute to business and society at large through the domain of fashion.

The Structure

Semester 1 – This semester of the Programme is akin to the Certificate Phase. This provides the basis for selection to the diploma /M.A. Phase-which will primarily test the student’s ability to demonstrate one’s potential in the chosen area (s) of application. Despite their common vertical background, students may come from varying institutional origins; this semester will bring all the entrants to the required level in terms of conceptualization skills and ability to identify individual needs for specialization at the following stages. At the end of the semester, the students will undergo industry internship.

Semester 2 – This semester of the programme is akin to the Diploma Phase. It is project-driven. Students will have to present a group project, based on design trend forecasting, analysis, and interpretation; and an individual project that focuses on the development of options for creative application(s). The student, in this phase of learning, must develop clear evidence of creative and practical abilities required for advanced design applications through the individual project – which will be converted to actual prototype development in the final semester.

Semester 3 – This semester is akin to the Degree Phase. It will primarily involve the development, and execution/ application of innovative design prototypes. Such prototypes will be expected to be concept-driven, and will have to be derived from the previous semester’s Individual Project. Students will be expected to deepen their concept development in chosen area of work, which will be demonstrated through a Masters Project. They will also be expected to create their own resources, which include activities such as (a) producing their own design presentation(s); (b) networking with external resources; and (c) independently developing/ innovatively using appropriate raw materials.
