The programme of the Master in English is largely determined by the research specialties of the staff, which means that courses are informed by cutting edge work in a wide variety of fields. The orientation to research means that the best students are encouraged to apply for doctoral positions, e.g. with the Flemish Fund for Scientific Research (FWO). (Note: applicants to FWO positions must hail from the European Economic Area.) Research specialties in English at the University of Antwerp include Genetic Criticism, Narrative Theory, Queer Studies and Urban Studies on the side of literature (with Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, Thomas Pynchon and Wallace Stevens as “special authors”), and language typology, semantics and syllabus design on the side of linguistics.
