International Master in Early Language Education for Intercultural Communication
The two-year International Master's Degree Programme in Early Language Education for Intercultural Communication (120 ECTS) is offered jointly by the University of Eastern Finland (Joensuu campus, Finland) and the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia (St Petersburg, Russia). The programme prepares students to teach foreign languages to children. Special emphasis is laid on early age intercultural communication competence.
The overall maximum number of available study places is 20 (10 per each university).
The general strength of the programme is generated by its didactics and methodology relying upon a balanced combination of theory and practice to be used in a future work as a teacher or educator. The programme facilitates gaining a multicultural view on educational issues and sharing personal/collective experience in intercultural settings. The programme prepares its students to effectively tackle challenges and possibilities arising from the globalisation, as well as cultural and linguistic diversity.
The curriculum is composed of the following three study modules:
ORIENTATION STUDIES (5 ECTS)
This section includes introductory courses that provide students with skills needed for starting his/her studies in the University of Eastern Finland and this particular programme.
MAJOR STUDIES (95 ECTS)
Major Studies include methodological studies, as well as research planning seminars. This module includes as well courses focusing on international professional communication. The content studies are oriented towards theory and practice of teaching foreign languages to young learners, current pedagogical and educational issues, innovative pedagogical solutions, as well as teaching and professional practice.
OTHER STUDIES (20 ECTS)
The content of Other Studies include an obligatory course "Intercultural Communication Competence" (5 ECTS) and at least 15 ECTS of Elective Studies. Elective Studies vary and may include any university-level courses that serve to deepen students' expertise in the field of education and intercultural competence .

Minimum requirements for the language skills verified through the official language tests are as follows:IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (5.5 in writing); TOEFL PBT: 580 (4 in writing); TOEFL iBT: 90 (22 in writing); PTE (Academic): 59
Applicants who have completed their secondary education or BA degree in English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the United States, do not have to take a language test.
Applications are evaluated according to the following criteria:
Applicants' abilities to achieve the learning outcomes of the programme are evaluated numerically from 0 to 10 by altogether four independent reviewers (two from the UEF and two from the HSPUR). Applicants will be ranked according to the total score.
Tuition Fees and ScholarshipsThere are no tuition fees for the programme, except for the student union membership fee (126 EUR). Moreover, accepted students are expected to be able to cover all his/her living costs in Finland. STARTING FROM THE APPLICATION PERIOD 2015/2016 applicants who completed their degree outside the EU/ETA –area will be required to pay an application fee of 100 EUR. The application fee will be collected regardless of the home country and nationality of the applicant, but according to the country where the applicant's previous qualification/degree has been completed.
