Program Description

International Executive Master of Arts in Educational Leadership & Change

The Hong Kong Institute Of Education

International Executive Master of Arts in Educational Leadership & Change

The International Executive Master of Arts (IEMA) in Educational Leadership and Change is designed to develop leaders with the capacity to operate successfully in an international leadership environment, and lead educational change in the East and Southeast Asian context.

The IEMA is designed for leaders who want to make a difference in their own schools, in the region and beyond. In other words, it is for leaders who want to ‘give something back,’ leaders with a social conscience and civic responsibility.

Our aim is to bring together people from a range of professional and educational backgrounds to create a stimulating, creative and practice-focused learning network within which meaningful change can be discussed and enacted. As such, it is ideal for leaders involved in local education settings, those in international schools, and those who follow the International Baccalaureate or other national or hybrid curricula.

This network will provide academic support and professional insight into cultural differences in leadership and workplace practices, and opportunities for development that last well beyond graduation. Both intellectual and pragmatic support will be provided by a range of staff holding a wealth of academic as well as ‘real-life’ leadership experience in international contexts.

Our mission is to enhance the capacity of our graduates to contribute to social and educational development in the region today and in the future.

Structure of the Degree

The degree programme is composed of eight courses. Six taught courses are delivered on-line, permitting participants to interact asynchronistically with instructors and each other. The online platform permits rich multi-media support. Additionally, participants complete one intensive weeklong School Improvement Institute that focuses on themes related to intercultural leadership and current issues such as accountability or using data for school improvement. Participants are required to join one School Improvement Institute, but may take a second in lieu of one on-line course. Finally, a School-based Inquiry Project focused on leadership, change implementation or school improvement in the participants’ professional context completes the required coursework.

All courses are taught by staff from EPL, APCLC and cooperating universities. All have international reputations and high levels of expertise in their fields. In order to ensure a grounded focus on problems of practice, experienced school leaders from the regionalso contribute to course delivery.

Participants who are interested in pursuing doctoral degree studies on completion of the degree are advised to contact either Professor Allan Walker or Professor Philip Hallinger.

Mode of Study

The courses are delivered by distance education. The use of online technologies enriches the learning experience and provides participants with the flexibility to integrate and manage their study and professional commitments. Online delivery also facilitates communication, work and networking with supervisors, fellow participants and international professional experts introduced in the programme.

Once you enroll as a participant, you will receive Internet access information and an email account. For each course, detailed study materials including lecture notes, sets of readings and assessment tasks will be provided via a dedicated online programme website. Our lecture streaming service will provide you with online access to narrated presentations for all of the courses.

Online coursework is supported through communication with academic staff by Facebook, Skype, telephone, email and discussion boards. As a participant you will also have access to support offered by a number of service providers within the Hong Kong Institute of Education including the Library, the Department of Education Policy and Leadership (EPL), and the Asia Pacific Centre for Leadership and Change (APCLC).
