Media Convergence: a practical application.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

With the introduction of web 2.0 in 2004, communication has changed. Interaction, user-focused design, social networks, video and content sharing, wikis, RIAs, multiuser games and other technological and content production advances have modified the concept of communication and information delivery. Today, mass communication cannot rely exclusively on the old marketing and entertainment rules, but needs to befaced with the changes technology has brought. The course will be divided in two parts: the first will deal with the theoretical aspects of modern communication. Concepts like media convergence, viral marketing and digital divide will be discussed. It will examine case histories from campaigns that have made a successful use of the new trends and it will also look at the work of students and artists who have used technology as a form of art. In the second part, students will be asked to apply what they have learnt to develop a strategy in response to an explicit communication need....

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course introduces students to Touch Designer, a user friendly, graphic node based program that enables the integration of complex 3d and compositing along with audio analysis and manipulation for the creation of installations and live ‘mixable’ content across multiple screens.

This program- Television Writing and Producing  is the only program of its kind in North America that prepares students for networking with television executives, and introduces them to agents in Canada and the United States. Students write and produce their own ideas while working with Emmy award-winning writers, producers, directors, set and costume designers, development executives, and agents. A unique teaching style features rotating instructors - currently working television professionals who normally wouldn't be able to make a full-time commitment. In just two-semesters, students graduate with TV reel scripts, a spec-script, and the knowledge and contacts in the industry to sell them. ...

Humber's Broadcasting - Radio program is designed to develop a successful broadcaster who already holds a degree or college diploma. In-depth courses cover writing, announcing, production, management, sales, programming, promotion, market research, interviewing techniques, news and sports writing and reporting. Course content continually adjusts to reflect current needs. The first semester combines performance skills with theory. Students focus on one of four pathways in the second semester: announcing, news, client services and marketing/sales. Hands-on training is provided at Humber's radio station and digital studios.

Work Placement

Key to this course is the 160-hour internship during September and October. Opportunities are available at radio stations and related media across Canada. The school works with the student to identify a suitable placement, which can be paid or unpaid. Many students secure contract or part-time jobs from their internship and move into full-time jobs in southern Ontario, across Canada, and around the world. ...
