Our specialist MSc programme in Banking and Finance is ideal for those who wish to pursue a career in the financial services sectors of industry or government, particularly banking and central banking, or for those who are looking for a route towards PhD study.

All of our modules are underpinned by the latest research and best practice, having been designed to equip you with up-to-date and relevant knowledge across a number of areas, including banking, finance and research methods. You will also benefit from the insights of a range of expert guest speakers.

The range of optional modules on the programme will enable you to specialise in areas of economics, banking and finance that best suit your career ambitions and interests.

Learning, teaching and assessment

Teaching on the Banking and Finance programme is provided by our world-renowned specialist staff using a number of methods, including: lectures, seminars, group work, feedback forums, one-to-one sessions with programme tutors, and workshops. Modules are assessed by a combination of examinations and skills-based courseworks.

Semester 1

  • Research Communication (two-semester module)

  • Introduction to Measure Theory and Martingales
  • Macroeconomic Policy and Financial Markets

Semester 2

Core modules

  • Risk Management and Derivatives and/or Corporate Finance
  • Banking and Financial Markets
  • Applied Financial Econometrics
  • Research Communication (two-semester module)

Optional modules (choose one)

  • Applied Banking and Financial Modelling
  • Stochastic Calculus and Theory of Stochastic Pricing
  • International Money and Finance

Summer period

Students satisfy the research requirement by examined participation in research seminars. Subject to special conditions, students may submit a dissertation instead.

Entry criteria

We ask for an upper second-class honours (2:1) degree or equivalent overseas qualifications in a subject which has a quantitative element. Good (2:1) grades in quantitative modules are required. Some previous economics is recommended. Examples of eligible quantitative subjects include accounting, maths, physics, chemistry, engineering, computing, finance, business and management.

English language requirement for international students

IELTS: overall 6.5 with minimum 6.0 in each component

The School will accept lower IELTS scores if you undertake the University's pre-sessional English course.
